Join us for 28th Annual Excellence in the Media & Newsmaker of the Year Gala

The Press Club of Southeast Texas will honor five finalists for Newsmaker of the Year and reward media professionals who enter the Excellence in the Media contest at the club’s annual scholarship fundraiser June 7. The event will also commemorate the club’s 50th anniversary with a golden jubilee partnership with Entergy Texas.

Press Club members select the finalists and the top recipient of the Newsmaker of the Year award, honoring the Southeast Texan who had the most significant positive impact on issues and events during the year 2018. The Press Club is made up of more than 200 journalists, educators, artists and public relations professionals in Southeast Texas. This award has been given out every year since 1991.

This year’s finalists, in alphabetical order, are:
● Keith Carter, renowned photographer and teacher at Lamar University, who had his 13th book published in 2018.
● Bishop Curtis Guillory, who has led the Catholic Diocese of Beaumont since 2000 and reached the church’s retirement age for his position in 2018.
● W.T. Johnston, head coach of the Newton Eagles, who won his second consecutive state title with the assistance of his son and assistant coach Drew despite suffering from a severe, life-threatening illness.
● DeAndre Nico, contestant from Port Arthur who made it to the later rounds of “The Voice” and was widely praised despite being eliminated in a bizarre manner by his celebrity coach, Adam Levine.
● Paula O’Neal, director of Some Other Place, which has provided food, clothing and other vital services to the needy in Beaumont.

The winner will be announced at the Press Club’s annual Excellence in the Media banquet on June 7 at the MCM Elegante Hotel & Conference Center in Beaumont. “Entergy Texas is proud to be part of the Southeast Texas Press Club’s Golden Jubilee,” said Sallie Rainer, president and CEO of Entergy Texas, Inc. “Many of our past and present employees have been a part of this worthwhile organization, including several serving as club officers over the past 40 years. In fact, a recently retired Entergy employee was the club’s very first scholarship recipient in September 1980. We congratulate the Press Club for its last 50 years and look forward to the next 50 years.”

The program will feature presentation of the club’s 2018 Excellence in the Media Awards, selected from over 400 entries submitted by area professionals in the fields of newspapers, television, radio, magazines, public relations and websites. Entries are being submitted through Friday, March 29; click here to enter. The banquet is the major fundraiser for the Press Club Memorial Scholarship, awarded annually to a communication student at Lamar University.

“We are excited to celebrate our 50th anniversary at this year’s banquet,” said Debbie Bridgeman, president of Press Club of Southeast Texas. “Expect a look back to the early days and a preview as to where our club is headed in the future, along with a few surprises.”
